Across West Texas, eastern New Mexico, and the arid Southwest, open water surfaces lose three to four feet of depth per year to evaporation — more in the driest counties. Willms et al. reported heifers with access to clean water gained 23% more than animals drinking directly from a pond, and an earlier trial found a 20% weight-gain penalty for yearling steers watering from dugouts over 70 summer days. Algae, silt, and manure loading all suppress voluntary intake, and intake drives gain.
Winter Ice Shuts Off the Water Supply
Ice caps tanks and ponds exactly when cattle need consistent intake to hold condition. Chopping ice is daily labor, propane and electric tank heaters add cost at remote sites, and freeze-thaw cycling shortens the life of tanks, valves, and float assemblies. Reduced winter intake means reduced feed intake and lost body condition score.

In parts of the Texas Panhandle the Ogallala has dropped more than 200 feet since large-scale irrigation began, with average saturated thickness down to roughly 51 feet and a further 0.66-foot average decline recorded in 2025.
